Speech clarity with the NAVIOM AV-110: what to assess at the operating position

NAVIOM AV-110
NAVIOM AV-110

When an operator cannot understand a message, describe the situation before searching for a single universal cause. The NAVIOM AV-110 technical sheet provides receiver, audio-output and transmitter specifications. They measure different properties. The operating position needs understandable speech in normal conditions, rather than specification figures added into an invented quality percentage. Here is the information that helps assess an installation and prepare a meaningful enquiry.

Separate signal conditions from listening conditions

First record the employee’s listening position, background noise and speaker used. The AV-110 external speaker output specifies a nominal 4-ohm load and at least 10 W at 13.75 V DC. This does not promise identical audibility in every room or vehicle. Speaker position and normal volume remain part of the actual installation, so record them with the circumstances in which the message was difficult to understand.

Do not turn distortion into a percentage of understood words

For the transmitter audio signal, the sheet specifies nonlinear distortion of no more than 10% at 85% modulation depth. This is a technical parameter under a stated condition, not a claim that a listener understands exactly 90% of a text. Retain both figures and the parameter name in comparison documents. Understanding a particular message depends on the complete situation; one transmitter figure cannot automatically describe the receiver, loudspeaker and acoustics at the other end.

Read receiver specifications separately

AV-110 sensitivity is −101 dBm or better at 12 dB SINAD using CCITT, while selectivity of at least 70 dB is stated for 25 kHz spacing. These concern RF reception rather than output volume. Retain the units and measurement conditions when comparing equipment. Discuss the 50-ohm SO-239 antenna path and actual antenna placement separately, because device specifications do not describe the complete installed chain.

Record a short working scenario

A useful assessment records the selected channel, operator position, typical noise, speaker and observed difficulty. Compare equivalent conditions after a real change rather than unrelated moments on air. The AV-110 provides adaptive volume, a Russian-language interface and three quick buttons; when preparing the position, these should support understandable user actions. This makes a speech-clarity discussion concrete instead of replacing it with an unsupported range promise absent from the short sheet.

Questions and answers

Does 10% distortion mean 10% of words are unintelligible?

No. They are different quantities. The sheet specifies a technical parameter at 85% modulation depth.

Does 10 W guarantee audibility in every cab?

No. The rating is specified into 4 ohms at 13.75 V; assess placement and noise at the actual position.
